Abstract

1,244,082 Adding metals to metals or alloys. KAWECKI BERYLCO INDUSTRIES Inc. March 11, 1969 [March 13, 1968], No.12756/69. Heading C7D. Additions are made to a molten metal by feeding a master alloy of one or more alloying or grain refining additives in the form of a wire or strip into a stream of the molten metal flowing through a troughed device, as close as possible to the beginning thereof, the feed and flow rates being adjusted to obtain a constant ratio between them. The master alloy may be of Al alloyed with one or more of B, Ti and Zr when the melt is of Al. The wire or strip may be fed from a mechanism with adjustable speed and in such a manner as to effect a significant disturbance of the flow without impairing the integrity of the stream. The treatment of Zn, Cu, Fe and Ni with elements such as B, Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta and borides of Zr, Nb and Ta is also referred to.
