Abstract
Pyridine and b -picoline are prepared by heating together a mixture of acrolein, acetaldehyde and ammonia in the presence of a catalyst which comprises a mixture of silica and alumina containing a proportion of zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, iron, copper, palladium or silver, or a compound of any of these. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature of 300-550 DEG C. The catalyst may also contain as an optional substitutent an oxide of titanium, zirconium, cerium or thorium.
