Abstract

963,652. Golf clubs. J. H. ONIONS, and H. BIRD. May 20, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 9302/62. Heading A6D. The head 10 of a wood is preferably moulded from a thermoplastic material and is provided on its striking face with an insert 12 of harder material, such as glass-filled nylon or metal, the insert being of cruciform shape with its vertical limb extending to the top and bottom edges of the striking face. The insert comprises two parts, 13, 14, the vertical part 14 being recessed to receive the horizontal part 13. Both parts are formed with rearwardly extending projections for keying with the material of the head 10, and for keying with each other. Moreover, projections at the lower end of part 14 are apertured to receive screws mounting the sole plate 24, whilst a further projection on part 14 assists in locating a weight within the head 10. As disclosed in the Provisional Specification, the insert may be of any shape which is elongated towards the toe and heel of the wood.
