Abstract

The invention comprises 3b -hydroxy-20-oxo-5a -16(17)-pregnen-16-acetic acid and the preparation thereof by oxidizing a compound of the formula: <FORM:0961698/C1/1> (wherein R and R1 are hydrogen atoms or acyl groups each containing at most 10 carbon atoms and R11 is hydrogen or an alkyl group of at most 10 carbon atoms) with chromic acid-acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid, potassium permanganate-acetic acid or ozone to obtain a compound of the formula: <FORM:0961698/C1/2> and then treating this with an alkali metal hydroxide.
