Abstract

961,264. Coin testing mechanisms. K. C. BATEMAN. Dec. 10, 1962 [Dec. 8, 1961], No. 46563/63. Heading G4V. A mechanism for testing coins has two opposed cams 27, 28, Fig. 6, with ledges 33, 34 against which the rimmed edge of a coin strikes, and with shoulders 35, 36 which gauge the annular thickness of coin as the cams rotate under the weight of the coin. The cams are pivoted eccentrically on the end 5 of mounting rods which may be rotated to vary the spacing between the cam edges. As seen in Figs. 1 and 3 the mechanism delivers a coin to the cams by means of a runway 14 beneath the hopper 10, 11. Should a coin jam in the cams it may be cleared by a pin 62 which sweeps underneath the coin at the same time as a wheel 73 descends and engages a flange 75 to open the clearance plate 4. If a coin negotiates the cams successfully it falls to a runway 46, Fig. 3, and travels on to an adjustable runway 47 which pivots at 49, Fig. 1, and by means of the setting screw 50 leaves a gap between the edge of the runway and the back plate so as to eject thin coins therethrough. While passing along runway 46 acceptable coins are supported at their upper extremity by a bearing edge. Coins of too small a diameter are tipped on to a bent back flap 51, Fig. 3, which arrests them. A pressure arm 53 encourages coins to tilt against the flap. An arrested coin is released by easing the clearance plate 4 open when the coin falls to be collected by reject shoots 77. From the runway 47 coins fall on to an anvil 58 from which they bounce over a hoop 59 to a collecting shoot if they are of the correct elasticity. In falling on to the anvil the coins pass a permanent magnet 61 which deflects ferrous discs so that their rebound from the anvil results in rejection. When falling on to the runway 46 after passing through the cams 27, 28,a coin deflects a pin 53, Fig. 1, arranged to capture washers by entering into the hole in a washer as it sets off down the runway.
