Abstract
885,390. Coin testing. BATEMAN, K. C., and STEDMAN, J. J. Nov. 5, 1959, No. 37559/59. Class 27. A device for testing several properties of a coin includes a single pivoted member 37 for checking the thickness of a coin inside the rim, the member 37 being fitted late in the series of tests so that it is not subjected to wear by coins rejected in earlier tests and is not affected by variable forces imparted to the coin during insertion. A clearing wall 5 is hinged to a main plate 1 by a spring 6 and balls 7 and an inclined runner 9 is secured to the main plate; spacers 11 provide a gap between the runner and clearing wall for the rejection of too-thin coins and an adjustable needle point may be provided on the plate or wall for trapping too-thick coins. The coin, after insertion in a slot 17, falls between a guard 18 to the runner and passes an arm 19 weighted by a slug 20 and having a pin 21 which will arrest a washer, Coins too small in diameter lean outwardly past the bottom edge of an adjustable plate 29 and against a barrier 31 and are caught by a finger at the end of the barrier. After passing a permanent magnet which will retain steel slugs, the leading edge of the coin strikes a trigger 40 of the member 37 and pivots it so that a sear 39 at the other end engages just within the rim of the coin; if the thickness is correct, the trigger is pushed completely aside and the coin acting on the sear can continue the rotation of the member 37 until the coin is clear. If the coin is too thick, the member 37 jams on the coin before the trigger is clear and the coin is trapped. A bracket 41 for the bearings of the member 37 can be distorted by a screw to provide fine adjustment of the member. A bias weight 45 is provided on the member and an adjustable stop 46 fixes its rest position. Clearing coins.-Trapped coins are released on pressing a button 12 having a conical face 13 abutting an extension 15 of the clearing wall. A non-magnetic strip secured to the wall in front of the magnet pushes the slug away from the magnet. Released coins or slugs fall to a reject shoot 23.
