961,094. Stretching and bulking yarns. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. May 28, 1963 [June 26, 1962], No. 24423/62. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] In a process for drawing and bulking monofilament or multifilament synthetic e.g. nylon, yarn, undrawn yarn is forwarded (directly from the filament spinning machine or a spinning package) at a predetermined rate to nip rolls of a stuffer-box crimper which are rotated at a peripheral speed at least twice the linear speed at which the yarn is forwarded thereto so as to draw it. The heat engendered in the yarn by the drawing action is sufficient to set the crimp imparted by the immediately subsequent operation. This heat may be limitatively controlled, according to the position of the point of draw in relation to the nip rolls, by a friction device e.g. a snubbing pin. As shown, yarn 1 (the filaments of which may be of trilobal crosssection) is fed by rollers 3 through guide 5 into the nip of rolls 7, 9, and is crimped within the stuffer zone between rolls 7, 9, and a discharge wheel 11 the rotary speed of which determines the crimp frequency which may thus be preselected and maintained constant in the yarn withdrawn by rolls 17.
