A knife-sharpening machine comprises one or more pairs of grinding wheels 10, 12 mounted on respective support members 18, 20 to form a V-gap along which a knife can be drawn so as to be sharpened thereby, and screw means 26 for effecting relative movement between the support members to adjust the amount of overlap of the wheels, relative movement of the members tending to increase the overlap being effected against the action of spring means 36. The support members are mounted on pivots 22 on a base 24 which has an upstanding portion 38 slotted to receive the screw 26 extending through holes 28 in the support members. The ends of the screw have oppositely-handed threads engaged by nuts 30 which are prevented from rotating by flats on the support members. A square portion 34 is adapted to receive a tool whereby the screw may be rotated to move the supports towards or away from one another against the action of springs 36. The grinding wheels with interposed spacers are secured by nuts to sleeves having pulleys connected by belts to an electric motor so that the grinding wheels associated with one support rotate in the opposite direction to those on the other. The sleeves are rotatably mounted on shafts 14, 16 held by screws to the upper ends of the supports 18, 20. The shafts can be withdrawn from the supports on release of the screws to enable worn grinding wheels to be replaced. A cover 48 surrounds the grinding wheels and has a slot 50 for permitting a knife to be sharpened to be brought into engagement with the grinding wheels. One pair of grinding wheels may be coarse and the other fine, so that the knife is first ground coarsely and then finely. In another embodiment, the support members are slidable on the base.
