Abstract

A bonding agent for solid fuel comprises a "cracking" residue of petroleum, i.e. the concentrated residue arising from heat and/or catalytic treatment of petroleum, and a straight run or deasphalted petroleum pitch. The "cracking" residues are obtained by distilling the heavy fractions of cracking processes ("slurry oils") or heavy fractions arising from reduction processes and viscosity-breaking processes. The concentrated residues obtained have densities exceeding 1.10, and softening points over 100 DEG C. The proportion of "cracking" residue to pitch (softening point 70-75 DEG C.) is 10 to 50% by weight, preferably 20 to 40%, and the two components may be mixed before or after distillation of the "slurry oil." Three examples are given, including the properties of the bonding agent produced.
