Abstract
960,571. Construction and cooling of I.C. engine cylinders. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. March 20, 1963 [March 29, 1962], No. 11132/63. Heading FIB. In an air-cooled I.C. engine with a cylinder 14, Fig. 1 secured to a cylinder head and freely expansible in its axial direction in relation to the crankcase and with a separate jacket 12 which extends between the crankcase and the head and serves to guide cooling air around the cylinder and to support the cylinder and head as a unit which is centred in the cooling jacket in regions 16, 17 at the head and crankcase ends, the cylinder is received by the crankcase with a looser fit than at the centring locations. The cylinder may be secured to the cylinder by shrinkage or by a screw connection or by a combination of both. In another embodiment the cylinder is centred by machined cooling ribs 28, 29, Fig. 3. In further modifications the jacket may be of light metal, the bridge part 31 may be oblique to the cylinder axis and the cylinder head engages the jacket only in areas adjacent the stud holes.
