960,485. Hand shears. WILKINSON SWORD Ltd. Jan. 2, 1963 [Nov. 22, 1961], No. 41709/61. Heading B4B. [Also in Division E2] A hand tool comprises a pair of pivotally interconnected members, a catch 20 mounted in one of the members for rotation about an axis substantially parallel to the pivotal axis of the members, a part 20b of the catch extending outwardly from an external surface of the one member, a detent 20d located inwardly of the surface and rotatable by rotation of the catch, into engagement with an abutment 11c provided on the other of the members to lock the members in closed position. As shown, applied to a hand-pruner, the catch 20 comprises a rotor 20a housed in a recess in a handle 13 such that a portion of the rotor extends through the recess and overlaps and bears on a portion 11b of a blade 11 associated with a handle 14. The part 20b of the catch constitutes a thumb lever by which the rotor is moved to bring the detent 20d into abutment with a V-shaped recess 11c when the handles 13, 14 are pivoted to a closed position against a spring (not shown). The lower part of the rotor including the detent is made of plastics material. Movement of the rotor is limited by a spring-loaded ball catch (not shown) In a modification, the recess 11c is extended by a key-way in the blade 11 to permit the blades to be moved to a partially open position in which they may be retained by a spring- loaded ball catch.
