Abstract

959,797. Casting composite articles. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 9, 1961 [March 12, 1960], No. 8666/61. Heading B3F. A diamond die is made by supporting a drilled diamond 17 in an oversize metal setting 9, placing a metal, e.g. cast iron, ring 18 of lower melting point than the setting 9 around the diamond and melting it in the concentrator 7 of a high-frequency generator. After solidification, the top edge 15 of the setting is milled off, the nickel centring tube 24 removed and a conical opening provided in the die. The chamber 1 is filled with inert gas before and during melting and the concentrator is fitted to an exhaust system via a duct 14. The ring 18 may comprise a cover ring portion 19 of a non- oxidizing metal of a lower melting point than the portion 18, which sinks down into the H.F. field after the portion 18 has melted, and is melted to form a protective cover on the cast iron of the portion 18. The setting may be " Monel " (Registered Trade Mark) metal or an iron-nickel-cobalt alloy having about 28% nickel and 18% cobalt, and the cover ring may be of a nickel-manganese alloy consisting of about 60% nickel and 40% manganese.
