Abstract

959,184. Desk &c. tops. E. N. MASON & SONS Ltd. Aug 23, 1960 [July 20, 1959], No. 24898/59. Heading A4H. [Also in Divisions B5 and B6] Panels usable as table tops, drawing boards &c. comprise top and bottom metal panels enclosing paper or metal honeycomb cores and having peripheral closures, at least one of the panels having on its outer face a non-metallic covering or coating of higher heat-insulating value than the metal. As shown, Fig. 1 (Provisional Specification) steel panels 1 peripherally dished as at 3 enclose a paper honeycomb 6 and are joined at their edges by a peripheral moulding 8 of H-section the exposed surface of which is shaped to conform to the edge of the panel, the enclosed portion being of rectangular section or moulded as at 11. In a modification rectangular steel panels enclosing a paper honeycomb are closed around their edges by a wooden frame having a peripheral groove in its exposed surface into which is secured a tongued portion of an edge-covering strip of plastics material. The tongued portion may be serrated and/or may be secured by adhesive. In Fig. 1 (Complete Specification), a steel base sheet 16 having upturned flanges 17 is covered by a surface sheet 21 having end portions 25 turned under at 23 and up at 24. U-shaped reinforcing sheets 18 extend transversely between the sheets 16, 21 and are secured to sheet 16 e.g. by welding or by integral nuts 18a taking fixing bolts. The sides of the panel are closed by U- shaped sheets secured by bolts, with their concave faces outwards, to the sheet 16, and these in turn are covered by similarly shaped and similarly secured sheets the flanges of which embrace the edges of the sheets 16, 21. The spaces between the sheets 16, 21 are filled with honeycomb material 19. The honeycomb materials used may be impregnated e.g. with synthetic resin and the coating or covering on the top, and if desired, also the bottom panel may comprise enamel or polyvinylchloride.
