[Also in Division B7] The control member'of a ground-based flight trainer is loaded to simulate the feel during actual flight, using a displacement transducer and an accelerometer to determine the basic value of the load, these signals being modified in a computer by factors representing the simulated flight conditions. As shown (Fig. 2) movement of the control column produces a signal from a displacement pick-off which is modified in a flight computer in accordance with the static forces, e.g. friction, elasticity, Mach number, etc. This is fed into an amplifier A together with a signal from an accelerometer, and opposed by the signals from the displacement pick-off of a hydraulic servo-motor, and from a force transducer measuring the load on the control column. The output from amplifier A is fed through a phase-sensitive rectifier to produce a D.C. signal energizing the servomotor. The accelerometer output signal may be modified by shaping circuits to give a desired loading variation, simulating the inertial effects of the control mechanism and the mechanical assemblies coupled to it.
