Abstract
1,229,883. Ground testing space vehicles. FIAT S.p.A. 17 May, 1968 [18 May, 1967], No. 23625/68. Heading B7W. [Also in Division G1] In apparatus for ground testing the attitude control system 7 of a space vehicle 1, a programme unit 9 supplies input signals to the control system 7 whereby actuators 8 apply a torque to the vehicle 1 that deforms a bar 4, which deformation is converted by a pick-up device 5 into an electric signal from which a data processing unit 6 calculates the angular displacement that would be undergone by the vehicle in free flight, signals representing this information then being compared with the input signal from the unit 9. In the embodiment shown, the space vehicle is movable in a fluid bearing 2 about a single axis. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) three degrees of freedom are provided in that a partially spherical member attached to the vehicle moves on a fluid cushion in a partially spherical cavity. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), a device simulates a celestial reference and a sensing device sends to the control system 7 signals representing the variations in the vehicle attitude with respect to the simulated celestial reference. For simulation of relative motion between the space vehicle and the reference, a computer processes signals from the actuators 8 and transmits signals that move the reference device mechanically.
