Abstract
958,185. Electromagnetic switches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Nov. 22, 1962 [Nov. 22, 1961], No. 44205/62. Heading H2B. A sealed magnetic contact device comprises a bifurcated change-over magnetic contact blade 4 both forks 5, 6 of which normally engage a fixed non-magnetic contact 2. The upper surface 8 of fork 6 and the lower surface 7 of fork 5 are coated with one of the precious metals, gold or silver. When the device is energized, the fork 6 is attracted to a fixed magnetic contact 3 while the other fork is still in engagement with the non-magnetic contact 2. When the device is sufficiently energized, the other fork 5 is attracted to the magnetic contact 3 as well. On de-energization, fork 5 engages contact 2 before fork 6. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), one fork is uncoated and the other is coated on both sides with precious metal. On energization the coated fork engages the magnetic contact before the uncoated fork and on deenergization leaves the magnetic contact before the other one. The device may be energized electromagnetically or by the approach of a permanent magnet.
