Abstract
957,644. Snap-action switches. CUTLER-HAMMER Inc. June 15, 1962 [June 15, 1961], No. 23104/62. Heading H2B. A double-pole snap-action switch is provided with two bridging contacts each having an arc-resistant part and a low contact resistance part. The base 10 comprises two recesses 17 at one end for locating two resilient blade contacts 14 respectively, and two recesses 19 at the opposite end for locating two more resilient contacts 15 respectively. The contacts 14 and 15 extend into a central recess 16 where they engage opposite surfaces of an insulating plate 23 slidable on ribs 24. The plate 23 has slots in its sides to accommodate the bights of generally U-shaped contact elements 25 and 26 as shown. Each pair of contact elements 25 and 26 co-operates with a respective pair of fixed contacts 14 and 15 such that arcing occurs on element 25 made of copper, for example, while the main circuit load is carried by element 26 of silver alloy or silver-plated metal. The carrier plate 23 is moved with a snap action by means of a rectilinearly movable actuator 13 and over-centre compression spring 32 carried by a swinging stirrup 34 and engaging a projection 30 on plate 23. Screws 29 secure cover 12 and an insulating plate 11 to the base 10, thereby retaining contacts 14 and 15 in position. Clips 21 provide for wedge gripping of wire leads inserted through openings 22. In a modification (Figs. 8 to 11, not shown), each pair of contacts 25 and 26 is replaced by a single U-shaped copper contact having a layer of silver which is removed to expose copper in the areas where arcing will ocour.
