Abstract

The invention comprises dyes, free from carboxylic or sulphonic acid groups, of formula <FORM:0957416/C3/1> where R is a thiazolyl, or thiodiazolyl, radicle, free from sulphur-containing and cyano group containing substituents, R1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl radicle of 1-3 C atoms, R2 is H or OMe, and X and X1 are hydroxy C2-C4 alkylene groups esterified with an unsubstituted, or substituted, C1-C5 aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid. The dyes are made in the usual fashion from appropriate heterocyclic diazo components, and N-substituted coupling components, one coupling, being effected in an acidic medium, or by esterifying appropriate N-di-(hydroxyalkyl)-group containing dyes. X and X1 are preferably derived from b -hydroxy-ethyl and b ,g -dihydroxypropyl groups and are preferably -CH2CH2OZ where Z is a substituted, or unsubstituted acetyl group. R is preferably a thiazol-1,3-yl-2 or thiodiazol-1,2,4-yl-5 radicle. Indicated acids, from which X and X1 are derived are C1-C5 fatty acids which may contain substituents such as halogen atoms or cyano or methoxy groups, specified being acetic, cyan-, methoxy- and mono-, di- and tri-chloroacetic, propionic, butyric and benzoic acids. Specified diazo components are 2-amino-5-nitro - thiazole - 1,3), 3 - phenyl - 5 - aminothiodiazole - (1,2,4) and 5 - amino - 3 - methylthiodiazole-(1,2,4). The dyes colour polyamide and polyethylene terephthalate fibres. Examples are given of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing the above fibres in orange and blue shades.
