Abstract

The invention comprises dyes which are free from sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups and are of formula <FORM:0957415/C3/1> where R is a cyanobenzene residue, which may contain halogen and/or alkyl, and/or further cyano substituents, R1 is hydrogen, or halogen, or a 1-3 C atom alkyl group and X1 and X2 are hydroxy C2-C4 alkylene groups esterified with an unsubstituted, or substituted, aromatic, or C1-C5 aliphatic, carboxylic acid. The dyes may be made by conventional diazotization and coupling processes, coupling occurring in an acid medium, or by esterifying appropriate bishydroxyalkylamino dyes. R preferably contains an additional cyano, or alkyl, group or halogen atom. X and X1 are preferably derived from substituted, or unsubstituted, acetyl radicles and b -hydroxy-ethyl or b -g -dihydroxypropyl groups. Specified C1-C5 acids, which may contain halogen atoms, or cyano, or methoxy, groups include cyanoacetic, mono-, di- and tri-chloracetic and butyric acids, other indicated acids, or esterifying agents, being benzoic acid and acetyl chloride and anhydride. Representative of specified diazo components are 2,5-dicyano-, 2-cyano-5-chlor-, 4-cyano-, 2-bromo-4-cyano- and 2,4-dicyano- 3,6 -dimethyl-anilines. The dyes colour polyamide and polyethylene terephthalate fibres. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes, and their use in colouring processes, red and yellow shades being obtained.
