In preparing material, e.g. wood chips or shavings, for moulding, the material is fed to a tube 2 which is moved to and fro by rotation of a vertical shaft 5. The inclination of the tube is adjustable and the material is distributed symmetrically over the width of a receptacle 1. A shoot 8 is pivoted on the receptacle and the lower end of the shoot is oscillated by cams 14 engaging rollers 13 provided on the shoot. A stationary plate 9 adjustable by screws and nuts 10, 11 coacts with the shoot and has devices 17a, 17b for maintaining the height of the material in the shoot between predetermined limits. A pinned or toothed roller 16 extends across the width of the discharge end of the shoot 8 and is intermittently rotated, e.g. by a ratchet. An endless conveyer 18 is provided with a brush 39 for removing particles of material and endless chains 34 fitted with spikes 36 co-operate with the conveyer to distribute the material into moulding boxes 37 supported on a conveyer 38. Alternatively, the material may be conveyed away for treatment elsewhere. The chains 34 are driven at higher speed than the conveyer 18. The cams 14 are so formed that the shoot 8 moves slowly in the direction of the stationary plate 9 but accelerates in the opposite direction. In operating the apparatus and during the period when the shoot 8 moves slowly towards the plate 9, a " bridge " of material forms in the shoot but is cleared when the shoot moves back quickly. The roller 16 deposits material from the shoot on to the conveyer 18 where the material is loosened and trimmed by two banks of forks 29 which are actuated by crank-shafts 25. If the material accumulates to more than a predetermined amount at the beginning of the Section 18A of the conveyer, pressure is exerted on a pivoted plate 23 and the drive to the roller 16 and cams 14 is switched off until the accumulation is reduced by continued operation of the conveyer 18. The distance between the points of the forks 29 and the Section 18a of the conveyer is adjustable by movement of the bearings of the crank-shafts 25 and by screw means 32, 33 for vertically adjusting the framework 31 supporting the conveyer. A variable speed gear may be provided for the conveyer.
