956,427. Re-constituted tobacco. P. LORILLARD CO. July 17, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], No. 27443/62. Heading A2C. A method of producing tobacco sheets from tobacco fragments comprises dividing pieces of tobacco leaf stems suspended in a liquid into fibres to form a thick semifluid mixture, applying the mixture and other tobacco fines on to a surface to form a layer of the fibres and fines, and drying the layer to form a self-sustaining sheet in which the fibres are interlaced to impart strength to the sheet. Tobacco stems and fragments are fed into a mill 10 where they are broken into lengths of # to ¢ inch. They are then transferred to a mixing tank 11 where water is added to the proportion of 6 to 13 parts of water to 1 part of slivers and stems by weight. Flavouring materials may also be added. The soaked tobacco is discharged into a supply tank 12 from which it is fed to an homogenising device 13 which separates, by means of high frequency vibrations, the tobacco fibres without breaking them into shorter lengths and produces an aqueous suspension of the fibres. Recirculation of the suspension may be effected via a by-pass line 20. The suspension is passed to a further mixing tank 21 where fine particles of tobacco are added. The mixture is then passed through a second homogenising device 22, provided with a by-pass line 23 to a storage tank 24, the moisture content of the mixture in the tank 24 being 6 to 8 parts of water to 1 part of tobacco solids. A pump 25 pumps the mixture, via booster pumps 26, to spray nozzles 27 which discharge it on to an endless moving screen 29 as a layer L. The layer L is dried in a drying tunnel 32. Surplus liquid is returned to the tanks 11 and 24 by lines 31<SP>1</SP> and 28<SP>1</SP>. A small proportion of binder, such as propylene glycol alginate, can be added if desired in any of the tanks.
