Abstract
1,239,939. Reconstituted tobacco. AMF Inc. 26 Nov., 1968 [7 Dec., 1967], No. 56054/68. Heading A2C. A smoking composition for forming into reconstituted tobacco products comprises finely divided tobacco and an adhesive therefor comprising ethyl cellulose with an ethoxy content of 45.5% to 46.8% and a viscosity at a 5% concentration in an 80/20 mixture of toluene/ethanol (weight/ weight) of at least 5,000 cps. at 25‹C. Preferably the viscosity at 2% concentration should not exceed 10,000 cps. at 25‹C. The ethyl celulose is dissolved in a solvent such as methanol, ethanol, methylene chloride, toluene-ethanol or -methanol mixtures, or isopropanol-water mixtures containing from 88-97% isopropanol. Tobacco dust is dispersed in the adhesive so formed and the resultant slurry cast or otherwise applied to a moving belt, and dried at a temperature below the boiling point of the solvent, to form a sheet having an enhanced wet strength over that of conventional reconstituted tobacco sheets. The process may also be used for forming rods, cylinders, plugs or shreds of reconstituted tobacco. Humectants or plasticizers such as triethylene glycol, propylene glycol or glycerine, fibres, fungicides, siliceous earth and colouring additives may be incorporated in the slurry prior to shaping.
