955,988. Valve gear. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Sept. 20, 1960 [Sept. 26, 1959; Aug. 29, 1960], No. 32324/60. Heading F1B. In an I.C. engine valve operating mechanism, a rotatable cam 3 Fig. 1 engages a tappet 4 slidably mounted in a moveable assembly 106 which oscillates about a stationary axis parallel to the cam axis and a pair of spring blades 124, 1241, mounted on the assembly 106 is engaged by an eccentric 123 alternately during camshaft rotation, the arrangement being such that during low speed operation the moveable assembly is oscillated, the extent of oscillation decreasing with increasing engine speed whereby the valve timing is automatically modified so the engine speed varies, valve lead or lag present at high engine speed being reduced or eliminated as the engine speed reduces. Opposed spring- loaded pistons 13, 131, sliding in clylinders 15, 151 act on arm 9 and tend to urge assembly 106 into the equilibrium position. Each cylinder 15 or 151 communicates through a calibrated orifice 17 or 171 with ducts 16 or 161 fed with pressurized oil from the lubrication system, the restricted orifices 17, 171, causing a greater damping effect as the engine speed increases.
