Abstract

An extreme pressure lubricating oil which contains active chlorine and/or active sulphur also contains 0.05-5 weight per cent based on the total composition of an oil-soluble polyoxoaluminium acylate. Acylates mentioned include those derived from behenic, lauric, myristic, stearic and oleic acids, and the preparation thereof is described in Specifications 806,113, 809,309, and 825,878. Some products contain ester formed during their preparation, e.g. isopropyl oleate, and such esters may be present in the final composition. The lubricating oil base may be a petroleum oil, kerosine, polyalkylene glycol, or an ester, or a semi-solid material such as lard. The active chlorine may be in the form of chlorinated hydrocarbons (e.g. wax), and the active sulphur may be in the form of a sulphurized additive, e.g. sulphurized sperm oil. Alternatively active chlorine and active sulphur may be present in a single molecule, e.g. sulpho-chlorinated fat.
