Abstract
955,263. Packings. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Aug. 9, 1960 [Aug. 26, 1959], No. 27613/60. Headings F2B and F2T. Packing means between relatively reciprocating or rotating members, e.g. a piston or shaft packing, comprises an elastic body having a lip portion 22 applied by its inherent tension on the member on which the body is mounted (i.e. the piston 10, Fig. 1, or gland casing 28, Fig. 21) and a second diverging lip portion 13 which is of annular coned and uniformly thick form and is arranged to slide with its cylindrical end face engaging by the inherent tension of the lip the surface of the other member (i.e. the cylinder, Fig. 1, or shaft 26 (Fig. 21) and with that face opposed to the one subjected to higher fluid pressure in use engaging against the correspondingly-shaped face of a circular support (i.e. 19, Fig. 1, or 27, Fig. 21) which is mounted on the member on which the body is mounted (i.e. the piston 10, Fig. 1, or gland casing 28, Fig. 21). The packing body is shown in Fig. 1 mounted on a piston rod or reciprocating or rotatable shaft 10 and has the sealing lip 13 formed at its outer end with a reverse taper 16 to provide with the surface of the cylinder 11 an undercut pocket for collecting lubricant; the edge of the lip may be provided with peripheral grooves, such as 14a, for retaining lubricant and may be designed to act as a non-return valve. The rear face 18 of the packing is rounded or provided with radial lugs to fit into the support 19 mounted on the rod or shaft and the base portion of the packing is provided with the tapered lip 22 resiliently embracing the rod or shaft and a heel 20 fitting into a recess in such member. When the rear face of the packing has radial lugs 24 as shown in Fig. 4, these may be interconnected by a positioning ring 25 and both the packing and ring are then mounted on a support element or holder 24b, Fig. 8, which is disposed on the rod 10 and has radial recesses 24a to receive the lugs; the cross-section of the ring 25 may be of flattened instead of circular form as shown. A further form of packing embodies two packing elements of the general form shown in Fig. 1 connected by radial lugs 24as shown in Fig. 16 and mounted on a holder on the shaft. When the packing is mounted in a gland, its axially-extending body is disposed between a support member 27, Fig. 21, contacting one face of the lip 13 and casing 28 and its lips 13, 22 are constructed as shown in Fig. 1. The support element or holder may be either a member separate from the member on which it is mounted or a member formed integrally therewith. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 24, the piston packing 52 is shown as being substantially of the form shown in Fig. 1 and the gland packing 53 represents a modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 21 wherein the sliding lip seal portion 12 is connected by lugs 24 passing through slots in the support member 24b to an auxiliary ring 25.
