Abstract

954,436. Shot-gun cartridges. H. A. LOCKWOOD, and R. L. HOCKLEY. Aug. 31, 1960 [Aug. 31, 1959], No. 30021/60. Heading F3A. A cartridge 10 has a cylindrical body 12 with an integral front closure 14 of hemispherical shape and reduced thickness and is closed at the base by a primer holder 20. The body 12 has a flange 16 to engage the cartridge chamber of the gun and the holder 20 has an annular bead 28 with a chamfered edge 34 to engage in a correspondingly shaped recess in the body 12. The propellant 44 is housed between a cupshaped recess in the holder 20 and an overpowder wad 46 with a depending flange 48. The case 12, holder 20 and wad 46 may be moulded from polyethylene and, to improve the gas seal, holder 20 and wad 46 are formed with annular beads 38, 50 respectively engaging the inner wall of the case. Between the wad 46 and the shot 18 is a friable, compressible wad 54, preferably made of a foam plastic or polyurethane. Radial grooves 58 in the nose 14 form lines of weakness along which the nose fractures. In a modification, Fig. 8, additional concentric grooves 60 are provided. In the construction of Fig. 10, the interior of the body 12 has a stepped diameter providing a shoulder 64 to co-operate with the bead 38. To facilitate its insertion in the case, the holder 20 is formed with a radius 68 at the edge of the skirt 36 and a radius 66 is provided at the mouth of the case. A spinning operation may be used to introduce the holder 20 into the body 12, during which operation the friction generates sufficient heat to melt the contacting surfaces and weld the holder to the body 12. The base of the holder 20 may be provided with recesses 75, Fig. 11, to receive projections on a spinning head. A thin wall 78 separates the primer cup from the propellant. Printed information on the wad 54 may be seen through the translucent body 12. A raised bead 92 is upset to secure the primer cup 22.
