In the writing or forward. position, Fig. 1, a clamping tube 6 is held in the forward position against the bias of a spring 12 by detent catches 15, and engages a jaw or collet member 4 of a lead guiding tube 5, which in turn retains the lead 3 in the writing positions. A spring 10, relatively weaker than the spring 12, biases the lead guiding tube 5 up into the clamping tube 6. On releasing the detent catches 15, tubes 5 and 6 move rearwardly together until a flange 8 on tube 5 abuts a longitudinally adjustable member 13. The spring 12 then moves the clamping tube 6 rearwardly relative to the tube 5 releasing the jaw member 4, so that the lead 3 is free to fall under gravity. During the retraction of the tubes 5 and 6, leaf springs 2 of a catching device close to form a lead retaining cup, Fig. 3. The writing length of the lead 3 is therefore automatically adjusted in accordance with the position of the member 13, which is adjusted longitudinally by turning the head 14 relative to the outer casing 1 of the pencil. Fig. 4 shows the member 13 passing through longitudinal slots in the clamping tube 6 before engaging the screw-thread on the inner surface of the casing 1.
