Abstract

953, 998. Coating webs. BELOIT CORPORATION. Jan. 14,1963 [Jan. 26,1962],No. 1619/63. Heading D1L. In apparatus for coating a paper web which comprises a backing roll 10 about which the web W passes and a smooth surfaced applicator roll 11 dipping into a pan of coating 12, the coating pan is in two parts i.e. a continuous front, lower, and back wall 17, and end walls 15,16, the two parts being movable apart (see Fig. 2) e.g. when the web breaks or at the completion of a coating, so that the coating liquid may drain away, the pan components and roll 11 cleared and a fresh web threaded up. The pan end walls 15, 16 are mounted together with the applicator roll 11 on arms 21 freely pivotable about a shaft 31 while the wall 17 is mounted on arms 20 also pivotable about the shaft 31 and movable under the influence of a pneumatic piston-cylinder arrangement 28. In normal operation the wall 17 is upwardly urged by the piston so that sealing strips 25 on the wall engage the end walls 15, 16 to form a liquid tight pan and raise the applicator roll 11 to the backing roll 10, adjustable stops 23 being provided to limit the pressure of the nip. In the event of web breakage or of coating completion the arms 20 are lowered by the pneumatic piston to the position D shown in Fig. 2 while the arms 21 are halted in an intermediate lowered position R by adjustable stops 38. Liquid is supplied to the pan via the hollow shaft 31 and a tube 36 which is rotatably jointed to the midpoint of the shaft 31.
