Abstract

953,079. Travelling-wave tubes. RAYTHEON CO. Nov. 2, 1960 [Dec. 18, 1959], No. 37726/60. Heading H1D. A crossed field travelling wave tube has a slow wave propagating structure 17, Fig. 1, an elongated electrode 19 coextensive therewith and defining therewith an interaction space, a cathode 12 injecting electrons at one end of the space and collecting electrodes 22, 24 at the other end of the space, electrode 24 being in line with the cathode and the electrodes 22, 24 being at different potentials so that the field in the collecting electrode space is different from the field in the interaction space so causing electrons to flow to electrode 24. The tube may be of linear or of circular form, Fig. 2 (not shown). An accelerating electrode 15 is provided opposite the cathode 12 and V 22 #V 15 , V 14 # V 12 , V 24 #V 19 . In the circular tube of Fig. 2 (not shown), the delay line is interdigitated, a periodically loaded waveguide or a strapped vane. The devices are backward wave oscillators.
