Abstract

A prime-coating composition comprises an epoxy compound and an aminoorganosilicon compound in which the amino group is connected to silicon through at least 3 carbon atoms; the compounds may be reacted together and may be applied as solutions in volatile solvents. Other hydrocarbylsilicon compounds, pigments, resins, dyes, fillers and antifoam agents may also be present. In examples the compositions are produced by refluxing various aminopropylsiloxanes with diglycidyl esters of bisphenol A in the presence of such solvents as toluene and monoethers of ethylene glycol, phenyltriethoxysilane being added in some cases. Epoxy compounds which may be used include aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aliphatic or cycloaliphatic-substituted aromatic monoepoxides and polyepoxides, of which a list is given. Additives include ketones, aldehydes, esters, drying, semi-drying or non-drying oils, fatty acids, silicone resins, vinyl polymers and co-polymers, polymeric acrylates and cellulose acetate butyrate. Specifications 952,991, 952,993, 952,994 and 952,995 are referred to.ALSO:A base member having an inorganic surface is provided with a first coating comprising an epoxy compound and an aminoorganosilicon compound wherein the amino group is connected to silicon through at least 3 carbon atoms, and with an organic polymeric coating on the said first coating. Suitable epoxy compounds and aminoorganosilicon compounds are listed; they may be applied as solutions in volatile solvents and may be pre-reacted together. The organic polymeric coating may be a paint based, e.g., on alkyd resins, phenolic resins, drying oils, poly-methacrylates, cellulose acetate butyrate, polyvinyl resins or silicones; or it may be an adhesive, e.g. a phenolic resin epoxy resin-based adhesive, in which case a further member coated with a first coating as aforesaid may be adhered to it. The base member may be of any metal between magnesium and silver in the electromotive series, and alloys and combinations thereof, e.g. steel, copper, Muntz's (Registered Trade Mark) metal, cadmium plated steel, aluminium and magnesium; or it may be ceramic, e.g. porcelain-coated steel; or of a hardened non-vitreous inorganic cement. Numerous exemplary and comparative coating processes and compositions are described. Specifications 952,991, 952,993, 952,994 and 952,995 are referred to.
