Abstract
A sintered cermet consisting principally of a tungsten metal matrix contains 0.1-3% by weight of iron, nickel or cobalt based on the weight of tungsten, and a ceramic such as Al2O3, MgO, BeO, dispersed throught the matrix. The preferred cermet composition contains 50-90% by volume tungsten, 0.5-6% by volume Ni and 10-49% by volume of a ceramic and optionally 0.5-6% of a deoxidizer such as titanium. The powdered constituents are mixed together, hydrostatically pressed at 20,000 p.s.i. and sintered in hydrogen. The ceramic material should have a melting point below that of tungsten and should not form a low melting point eutectic with the tungsten.
