A skip or hopper 10, Fig. 1, has its bottom discharge opening closed by a circular plate 56, Fig. 4, which is attached to a bar 66 by a screw 62, the bar 66 being hinged to the skip by a pin 70 and held in a closed position by a latch member 78. The skip is placed on a stand 12, Fig. 1, for emptying, legs 30 being of such a length that a rubber gasket 44, Fig. 3, on a hopper 42 is compressed by the lip of the discharge opening and forms an airtight seal. Rotation of a shaft 84, Fig. 4, swings a bar 82 away from the position in which it supports the bar 66 thus allowing the weight of the contents of the skip to open the plate 56. The shaft 84 is rotated by means of a hexagonal nut 88, Fig. 3, access to which is gained through a hole in the side of the hopper 42 covered by a flap 94. The hopper 42 may discharge on to a floor or any type of conveyer instead of a screw conveyer as shown. The latch member 78 moves to an over-centre position in which it is held by the weight of the contents of the skip. In addition a safety pin 102, 104, Fig. 4, is provided to prevent accidental discharge of the skip during transit. The latch 78 may be operated pneumatically.
