Abstract

951,859. Discharge lamps. PATENT-TREUHAND-GESELLSCHAFT FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN. June 1, 1962 [June 2, 1961], No. 21197/62. Heading H1D. A high-pressure vapour discharge lamp giving an emission similar to natural light and a high light yield has an envelope 7 of high melting-point material, e.g. quartz or alumina, and the energized filling comprises one or more rare earth halides, e.g. lanthanum or cerium chloride or bromide which are transparent and colourless in the molten state. Additionally, a rare gas, mercury, and excess halide may be present. The material to be energized forms a molten film 11 on the surface of the envelope 7 and the core, which may fill the tube or be urged against the film 11 by a weak magnetic field, may locally over-heat the material so as to produce a " vapour pressure " of material in the discharge substantially greater than that corresponding to the maximum wall temperature, the condensed material returning to the evaporating zone 11 by gravity or capillary flow. The lamp may be air or water cooled. Starting may be by external heating, a high voltage impulse, or by the rare gas filling.
