A fragile, elongated member-e.g. a glass rod intended to act as a recombination surface-is suspended along the discharge in a discharge lamp by a plurality of wires each of which has one end formed into an expandable clasp to grip the member, and the other end embedded in a respective nodular element which projects from the inner surface of, and is integral with or sealed to, the lamp envelope. A glass rod 26, Fig. 1, is supported along the axis of a fluorescent lamp, to form a recombination surface, by a plurality of wires 32 each having one end embedded in a corresponding glass stud 34 sealed to the envelope 12 which is coated with a fluorescent layer 14. A number of rods arranged in series may be employed, to reduce expansion troubles, and the rod or rods may be coated either with fluorescent material or a reflective magnesium oxide layer. The filling is of mercury together with 1 to 4 torr of argon or argon/neon mixture, and the pressure is maintained by the aid of aluminium heat shields 21 mounted around each lamp stem.
