Abstract
950,879. Fire extinguishing. H. ALERS HANKEY Ltd. Aug. 1, 1961 [Aug. 15, 1960], No. 27959/61. Heading A5A. [Also in Division B1] A method of fighting fires in sloping mine tunnels includes locating an open vessel containing foam-forming liquid in the tunnel at a level lighter than the fire, agitating the liquid by gas jets and allowing the foam to exude from the vessel and gravitate on to the fire. An apparatus comprises a rectangular casing 2 having a side opening 5 and supplied with foam forcing liquid 18 through a pipe 7 and nozzles 10. Compressed air is forced into the liquid through parallel pipes 13, each having a row of submerged orifices 16 directed so that the air jets impinge on each other in a corner 17 of the casing. The resulting agitation forms foam 19 which exudes through the opening 5. The casings may be divided into compartments by transverse partitions 6 to prevent the pipes 13 becoming uncovered on uneven floors, the tops and bottoms of the casings are flat to permit stacking in use. The amount and proportion of foam-forming compound supplied to the apparatus may be regulated, see Fig. 4, (not shown), and Division B1.
