A manipulator, particularly for use with a heavy press 32, comprises a drag bar 4 movable stepwise in one direction by a pair of manipulator assemblies having movable members 5a, 5b reciprocable simultaneously in opposite directions parallel with the drag bar and having means for selectively engaging the latter. Each manipulator assembly 2, Fig. 4, comprises a reciprocable cylinder block 5 co-oparating with two stationary hollow pistons 8, 9 to which hydraulic fluid is admitted alternately under the control of manual or automatic valve gear, through pipes 13, 16. The end of the stroke of the block is cushioned by conical plugs 14, 17 entering the open end of the relevant piston and end stops 18, 19 are provided. The drag bar 4 has a number of spaced conical holes engageable alternately by conical nosed pins 24, 25 carried by the cylinder blocks 5a, 5b. The pins have T heads 27, Fig. 5, which engage with an hydraulically actuated lifting block 29 provided at each of stations A, B, C, D. During movement of the drag bar the relevant pin 24, 25 is held upwardly by a latch which is released by a tappet at the end of the stroke. Two manipulators X, Y and one manipulator Z are provided respectively on the ingoing and outgoing sides of the press. An anvil 26 may be transported by the drag bar.
