Abstract

950,027. Window operating mechanism; stays. R. HAY. March 14, 1962 [March 24, 1961], No. 9738/62. Headings E2F and E2M. Window operating mechanism comprises a housing 1 attached to the window sill, a stay 5 pivotally connected at one end to the housing and at the other end to the movable window frame 3, and a screw and sleeve connection 8, 12 pivotally mounted in the housing and pivoted to the stay between the ends of the latter, the pivotal connections being such that the stay can move either in a fixed plane, for the operation of a vertically pivoted casement window, or in a tilting plane for the operation of a horizontally pivoted window. The sleeve 8 has a collar 14 which engages grooves 13 in a pair of hemispherical bearing halves (Fig. 8) rotatable in a substantially spherical cavity in the housing so that the sleeve can rotate about its axis and is universally pivoted in the housing but cannot move axially. The stay 5 is connected by a universal joint 20, 21 to a shoe 5a slidable in a channel 6 on the window frame 3 and carries at its other end a pivot 17 having hemispherical ends received in corresponding recesses in the housing. Two pairs of such recesses 18, 19 are provided so that the stay can be reversed for left or right hand operation. The housing includes a removable base plate 10 (Fig. 5). The sleeve 8 can be rotated by a handle 7, or alternatively a ratchet mechanism, a cord, or a sproket and chain can be fitted. A fly screen 4 is provided.
