949,061. Bearings ; toothed gearing. CAM GEARS Ltd. March 16, 1960 [March 16, 1959], No. 9015/59. Headings F2A and F2Q. A bearing unit for a steering mechanism has an open bearing surface 8 extending over not more than 180 degrees in cross-section and resilient material 7 to urge the bearing surface against the component it supports. A rackbar 3, Fig. 2, is urged by the resilient material 7 into mesh with a pinion 5 mounted on a steering-column 4. The material 7, having a projection 10, is locked thereby to a housing 9 and a screwed plug 11, Fig. 3, allows adjustment of the resilient loading. The bearing surface 8 may be formed on the material 7 or, alternatively, on an inner layer of gun-metal or nylon for example. The inner layer may be formed with locating flanges 8b and may be intercepted at 8a, thus allowing engagement of the material 7 with the rack-bar 3 to effect damping. A pair of diametrically-opposed units may be used to support a shaft.
