Abstract
Glutamic acid is recovered from a fermentation medium by adding a water-soluble zinc salt, rapidly adjusting the pH of the mixture to form 5.9 to 6.5 with ammonium hydroxide while slowly agitating the mixture. The mixture is then filtered to separate the zinc glutamate. Glutamic acid is recovered from the zinc glutamate by slurrying with water and adding sodium hydroxide, preferably a 50% solution to a pH of 12.3. The mixture is filtered and an acid added until a pH of about 3.2 is obtained and the precipitated glutamic acid removed and washed. Zinc chloride, sulphate, carbonate and nitrate are specified and the mixture is stirred at a low speed during addition.
