Abstract

948,467. Protecting transistor switching circuits. PYE Ltd. Nov. 15, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960], No. 39504/60. Heading H3T. [Also in Division F2] In a circuit for controlling the coil L1 of an electromagnetic brake in order to give a controlled degree of braking, the coil L1 is connected in series with a transistor TR1, the conductance of which is controlled by a control signal applied between terminals A and B so as to give a braking effect proportional to the signal. The voltage supply is derived from a bridge rectifier circuit BR and a condenser C1 and resistors R1, R2 and R3 constitute a bias network which bottoms the transistor TR1 when no control signal is applied to it so that maximum current flows through the transistor TR1 to the brake coil L1 to apply the brake. Alternatively, in an arrangement in which the brake is on when the coil is de-energized, the bias network is disposed to cut off transistor TR1 in the absence of a control signal. Diodes D1, D2 serve to protect transistor TR1 from back E.M.F.'s developed across brake coil L1 when rapid changes in control signal occur. The sensitivity of the circuit can be increased by the provision of a further transistor in cascade with the first transistor TR1, Fig. 2 (not shown).
