Abstract
An acetal is produced by the interaction of a dialdehyde polysaccharide, having a degree of oxidation of at least 75% and a stoichiometric excess of methanol or ethanol (assuming no cross-linking) in the presence of sulphuric or p-toluene-sulphonic acid as catalyst. A 40% aqueous sulphuric acid solution may be employed. The dialdehyde polysaccharide may be derived from maize, wheat, potato, rice, or tapioca starch, amylose, dextran, algin, inulin, or cellulose. It preferably has a degree of oxidation of at least 89%. 20-70 moles of alcohol and 0.04-0.1 mole of catalyst per mole of dialdehyde polysaccharide polymer unit are preferably employed. The reaction may be carried out at a temperature of 60-100 DEG C. a pressure of 1 atmos. to 30 lb./sq.inch, and a period of 1-20 hrs. The degree of conversion to methyl and ethyl acetal may be 32.5 and 29.5% respectively. The acetal may be precipitated from solution in excess reactant alcohol with isopropanol or a mixture of isopropanol and water. The acetal is soluble in benzene, toluene, ethylene glycol monoethyl and monobutyl ether, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, propyl acetate, chloroform, dimethylformamide, and dioxane.
