947,544. Making finned tubes; coiling. SCHWEISSWERK BULACH. Feb. 7, 1962, No. 4667/62. Headings B3A and B3E. A method of making finned pipes of oval cross-section in which a continuous strip to form the fin is wound on edge on to a rotating pipe is characterized in that the strip is held under tension tangentially to the pipe at the winding point and is hindered from lateral deflection so that it is deformed in its plane with expansion of the outer edge and contraction at the inner edge. A tube 60 of oval-cross section is clamped in a lathe and rotated while strip guide means on a base 1 is fed lengthwise of the tube by a lead screw. Strip 61, to be wound as a fin on the tube 60, passes from a supply (not shown) over a pulley 39 and through brake jaws 40, which apply tension to the strip, to be guided by a comb-like member 36 as it is wound on the tube and for the first few turns thereon. The guides 36 are carried by arms 27 pivoted at 26 and urged together by a spring 29 so as to press against opposite sides of the tube 60 which is guided by a plate 14 having an oval aperture and rotatable in a ring 13 carried on a support 11 on the base 1. The pivot spindles 26 are carried on arms 25 rigid with pins 23, adjustable about their axes in cross-heads 22, in turn adjustable about vertical pins 21. The strip may be flanged. The finned tube may be hot galvanized.
