Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula: <FORM:0947494/C2/1> in which R1 and R2 represent alkyl radicals, and X represents a straight-chain or branched-chain halogenoalkyl radical having a maximum of 4 carbon atoms; and processes for their preparation by (i) reaching an appropriate dihaloalkane with an alkali metal or ammonium salt of an 8-benzyl- 1,3- dialkyl xanthine in the presence of an aqueous alcoholic solvent, under reflux or in a closed receptacle at elevated temperature, or (2) by reacting an appropriate haloalkanol with an alkali metal salt of an 8-benyzl- 1, 3-dialkyl xanthine to obtain a 7-hydroxyalkyl- 1, 3-dialkyl-8-benzyl-xanthine and reacting this with a halogenating agent. A dimer is obtained as byproduct of process (1).
