946,649. Soot traps. R. AMBACH. Aug. 23, 1962 [Aug. 25, 1961], No. 32373/62. Heading F4J. In a device for the separation of soot from combustion gases by expansion, filtration and deposition on walls of deflecting passages, water sprays are used periodically to flush the device of soot accumulations. The device takes the form of an open-topped part 1 through the base of which a tube 2 passes connecting the device with a chimney or flue. The tube 2 has mounted thereon a convergent nozzle 3. Arranged in spaced relationship within the part 1 are two hood members 4, 5 in the form of inverted bucket-shaped members. The hood member 4 is perforated and lays within the member 5 which is solid walled. Combustion gases issuing from the nozzle 3 undergo expansion and deposit approximately 50% of their soot content within a chamber defined by the member 4, they then pass through the holes in the member 4 which acts as a filter and travel downwards until they reach a lower end of the member 5 whence the flow upwards between the member 5 and the part 1 to be discharged to atmosphere. Cleansing of soot deposited on the various surfaces of the device is achieved by a nozzle assembly 6 which sprays water periodically over the surfaces of the members 4, 5 and the internal surface of the part 1 washing soot deposited thereon down to the base of the part 1 whence the water carries it to a sewer via an outlet 1b.
