Abstract

945,651. Electron microscopes. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. March 6, 1962 [April 28, 1961], No. 8599/62. Heading H1D. A device for the electron microscopic presentation of magnetizable objects, in which a magnetic field B 11 , Fig. 4, whose magnitude and/or direction is preferably adjustable and which is directed at right angle to the electron beam, serves to magnetize the object, especially for the defocused presentation of submicroscopic details of magnetic structures, comprises an electron beam which enters the magnetic field B 11 at an angle to the optical axis S, the ray being deflected by the magnetic field in the direction of the optical axis so that the electron beam enters the electron lens practically parallel with the axis. Three separate magnetic fields are preferably provided, B 1 B 11 , B 111 , along the path of the beam and all of equal intensity, the extent l 11 , Fig. 6, of B 11 being twice that of the extents l 1 , l 111 of B 1 and B 111 . In one form, Fig. 4, the magnetic fields are created by a pair of E- shaped magnets energized by suitably wound coils, either a pair of coils one on each of the middle arms as shown, or by three pairs of coils wound on each arm. A detailed mathematical analysis of the path of an electron is given, and an arrangement is described wherein the whole of the magnetic structure may be tilted about an axis perpendicular to the electron beam.
