In a nuclear power plant, the turbine 33 is supplied with steam from the vaporizer 32 heated from the reactor 31. Superheating is effected by the superheater SH. If the reactor should cease operating, the plant may continue operating by heating SH with a conventional feed so as to operate it as a boiler. To permit instantaneous operation of SH as a boiler the hot water reservoir 25 is provided in series with the reactor and is connected to SH directly only in an emergency. In an alternative form, 25 may be heated by saturated steam from the turbine.
