A gravel &c. washer, comprising a horizontal drum in which the solids to be washed are advanced with water along the length of the drum whilst being agitated and the components of the mixture are discharged at the end, is fitted with rotary beaters arranged in the drum and adapted during rotation of the drum, to be rotated, thereby detaching adherent clay from the solids. Paddles or blades 18 radiate from a shaft 16, Fig. 2, staggered at angles of 45 degrees. The shaft 16 preferably extends the full length of the drum, supported in bearings 17, 17, Fig. 1, but the paddles are on part only of the shaft, forming a beater section wherein the mixture is washed and agitated, followed by a washing section in which the absence of mechanical beating allows the solids to separate. The blades 18 are strengthened by checks 22 and edge flanges The drum 2 rests on rollers 10 supported from a chassis 1, which may be mobile, and is rotated from a shaft 7 driven through a belt 9 and gear box 25, e.g. from an internal-combustion engine, a chain 5 engaging a sprocket 6 on the shaft 7 and also engaging sprocket teeth 4 projecting from a collar 3 on the periphery of the drum. The shaft 7 is extended to the input end of the drum where a sprocket 14 drives, through a chain, a sprocket 15 on the shaft 16. The speed of rotation of the shaft 16 exceeds that of the drum 2. Blades 23 are disposed at intervals along the inside length of the drum to assist the passage of the material. The input end of the drum has a feed ring 12 equipped with a central cone 13, to guide in the material, and at the outlet end the material passes:through a hood 24.
