[Also in Division B8] A container made of a plastics such as polystyrene, for storing specimens on a surgical swab or the like in an uncontaminated condition, comprises a test tube 12 having an annular lip 22 and a two-position cap 14 in which spaced superposed parallel grooves 30, 33 are provided, so that the lip 22 is received into the lower groove 33 in the open position of the tube, in which position the surrounding atmosphere is in communication with the interior of the tube by means of axially-extending recesses 32, 34, and into the upper groove 30 in the closed position of the tube so that communication between the surrounding atmosphere and the interior of the tube is sealed off. The cap also comprises a chuck to removably receive a swab stick 48. The container is sterilized, in its open position, by being sealed inside a plastics bag and placed in a chemical retort from which air is evacuated, after which a sterilizing agent such as ethylene oxide gas is introduced therein to penetrate the bag material. The container will remain sterile when taken from the retort, since the plastics material is impermeable to air. When the container is required for use, the cap 14 is removed from the container, a specimen is placed on the swab, and the cap is returned and pushed to the closed position.
