Abstract

Detergent bars comprise, by weight of the composition, (a) 10-75% of a water-soluble soap of a C10-20-fatty acid, or a mixture of such soaps, e.g. the sodium, potassium, ammonium or triethanolamine soaps, preferably a mixture consisting of 0-25% alkali metal tallow soap and 10-50% alkali metal coconut oil soap, (b) 10-30% of one or more water-soluble salts of formula R(X)nOSO3M, where R is a C10-20-alkyl group and is preferably derived from middle-cut coconut alcohol, X is an oxy-ethylene or -propylene group, n is 1-10, preferably 1, and M is an alkali metal, suitably sodium and/or potassium, ammonium, or substituted ammonium, suitably an alkanolamine containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms in the alkanol group, (c) 5-15% of electrolyte, e.g. alkali metal chloride, sulphate or carbonate or mixtures thereof, (d) 2-10% free C10-20-fatty acid, preferably coconut oil acids, hydrogenated tallow acids, or stearic acid, and (e) 2-10% of water. The electrolyte (c) suitably consists of a mixture of sodium and/or potassium chlorides and sulphates in which the ratio of chloride to sulphate is 3 : 1 to 1 : 3. The bars may also include (f) up to 35% of inert binder-fillers such as a water-insoluble alkaline earth metal or zinc soap (which may, if required, be formed in situ from soap (a)), starch, clays, or other normally waxy material, or up to 15% of alkali metal tripolyphosphates and bicarbonates, and (g) up to 5% of an aliphatic amide of formula R.CO.NR1R11, where R is hydrogen, alkyl or alkanol, and R1 and R11 are each hydrogen, alkyl, alkanol or alkylene linked through an oxygen atom, R, R1, and R11 having a total of 9-25 carbon atoms; the preferred amide is coconut monoethanolamide. Perfume, colour, preservatives may also be included. The mixture is formed as a paste, roll-dried, milled and plodded to form bars.
