Abstract
Ethylene copolymers are made by polymerizing ethylene containing 0.05 to 20% by volume of propylene and/or alphabutylene, in the presence of a catalyst comprising halogen-ortho-titanic acid esters, and an organo-metallic aluminium compound. The ethylene may contain 0.01 to 30% by volume of hydrogen. The catalyst may be the reaction product of a titanic acid ester such as monochlor-ortho-titanic acid trimethyl, triethyl, tri-n-propyl, triisopropyl, tri-n-butyl, or triisobutyl ester, dichloro-ortho-titanic acid dimethyl, diethyl, di-n-propyl, diisopropyl, di-n-butyl, or diisobutyl ester, or a trichloro-ortho-titanic acid alkyl ester with diethyl or diisobutyl aluminium monochloride, ethyl or isobutyl aluminium sesquichloride, or dichloride. The polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously, and the polymerizate recovered and purified by conventional techniques.
